Changing text size, images & colours

This section gives you instructions on how you can change the size of the text on this website to make it easier to read.We also tell you how to turn the website images off, so you can read the text only. If you have a slow connection to the internet reading websites as text only will reduce the time it takes to open a page.It is also possible within certain browsers to alter the colours used on websites when they are viewed. Wherever possible, we give you instructions on how to change the colours viewed on -screen, but some experimentation may be necessary to find the colours most appropriate to your viewing conditions.

The instructions are different for the various types of browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape and Firefox). There are also special instructions if you are using a Macintosh computer.

When changing your browser settings, please keep this information in mind:

* Bigger text means less information on the screen at one time and more scrolling.
* Don't select the same colour for background and text, as this will render text on your pages invisible.
* You may need to click on the "Refresh" or "Reload" button for changes to take effect.
* The help facility on the toolbar of the browser you are using also contains information to assist you further.

IInstructions for Macintosh users

There are full instructions on making use of the various versions of the Macintosh operating system's accessibility features. These include resizing text, text-to-speech function and keyboard alternatives to mouse functions. Instructions for Microsoft Internet Explorer users

To change the font size.

1. Select Internet Options from the View or the Tools menu depending on your browser.
2. Click on the Accessibility button.
3. Click the 'Ignore fonts now showing on web pages' box, so that it now shows a tick.
4. Click OK.
5. Click OK again to close Internet Options.
6. Select the View option from the Menubar.
7. Select the Text Size option, Choose the text size you prefer.

If you want to remove the images:

1. Select Internet Options from the View or the Tools menu depending on your browser.
2. Select the Advanced tab at the top right hand corner of the box.
3. Scroll down to the Multimedia heading.
4. Untick the box next to 'Show Pictures'.
5. Click on the Apply button and then click on the OK button.

To improve colour contrast:

1. Select Internet Options from the View or the Tools menu depending on your browser.
2. Select the Accessibility button that is near the bottom.
3. Tick the box next to 'Ignore colours specified on web pages'.
4. Click on the OK button once to return to the options menu.
5. Select the Colours button that is near the bottom.
6. Untick the box next to 'Use Windows colours'.
7. Click on the colour that you wish to modify (text, background or links).
8. Click on the desired colour from the colour palette.
9. Click on OK once to return to the Colours menu.
10. Click on OK again when you've completed your modifications.
11. With the second click, the colours on your screen should change.
12. Experiment with a variety of combinations until you find the one that is most comfortable for reading on-screen.

Instructions for Firefox users

To change the font size:

1. Select View from the menu bar.
2. Select Text Size.
3. Select the option you prefer to change text size.
4. If you want to remove the images:
5. Select the Tools option from the menu bar.
6. Select Options.

To change the font size:

1. Select View from the menu bar.
2. Select Text Zoom.
3. Select the option you prefer to change text size. If you want to remove the images:1. Select the Tools option from the menu bar.
2. Select Image Manager.
3. Select 'Block Images from this site'.

Instructions for Netscape users

To change the font size:

1. From the menu bar at the top, pull down the Edit menu.
2. Select Preferences.
3. Click on Fonts, which is listed under Appearances.
4. Choose a font size from the options listed.
5. Click on the desired font size from the pull-down menu.
6. Click Ok.
7. You have many options when it comes to font size. Try a couple of different sizes in order to determine the best for you.

To improve colour contrast:

1. From the menu bar at the top, pull down the Edit menu.
2. Select Preferences.
3. Click on Colours, which is listed under Appearances on the left side of the dialog box.
4. Deselect 'system colours'(click to get rid of the check mark in the box).
5. Click on the colour that you wish to modify (text, background or links).
6. Click on the desired colour from the colour palette.
7. Click Ok.

Instructions for AOL users

To change the font size:

1. Under 'My AOL' in the AOL Toolbar, select Preferences.
2. Then click on the WWW icon in the scrolling list on the left.
3. On the right, click on Advanced Settings. A dialog box will appear with a collection of controls on the right and a column of options on the left.
4. Select the Browser Display option on the left.
5. You can set the Text Size to 'Large' or 'Largest' for more comfortable reading.
6. Click the OK button in the Advanced Settings dialog box and then click the OK button in the Preferences dialog box to make your new settings take effect.
